Released posthumously on January 3, 1989, following Orbison’s demise from a heart attack on December 6, 1988, the song came out with “The Only One” as its B-side and was later reissued alongside “Crying” (version with k.d. lang). Achieving the ninth position on the US Billboard Hot 100 and securing the number one spot on the Adult Contemporary chart, the single marked Orbison’s return to the top 10 after a quarter-century hiatus.”You Got It” also attained the third position on the UK Singles Chart and secured spots in the top five in 10 other countries. Despite being a solo single by Orbison, the song was co-written by his fellow Traveling Wilburys bandmates, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne, who also contributed to the instrumental elements of the recording.
As detailed in The Authorized Roy Orbison, the song was captured at guitarist Mike Campbell’s garage in Los Angeles, California, and underwent mixing at George Harrison’s residence, Friar Park in Henley-on-Thames, England. Orbison performed the song publicly for the first and only time at the Diamond Awards Festival in Antwerp, Belgium, on November 19, 1988, a mere 17 days before his passing and the subsequent release of the single. This live footage was integrated into the music video for the song. In a 2014 rendition, additional footage from rehearsal and practice sessions was incorporated into the video.
