Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons – Who Loves You

About The Song

In this song, Frankie Valli, the frontman of The Four Seasons, addresses a girl experiencing a tough time. He urges her to consider who genuinely loves her and who will support her through these challenges, expressing hope that she’ll recognize him as that person.

The song, titled “Who Loves You,” was penned by original Four Seasons member Bob Gaudio and songwriter Judy Parker, who later became his wife. Similar to many of Gaudio’s compositions for the group, the lively melody contrasts with a melancholic, lovelorn lyric. Despite the somber tone, there’s a positive outcome, as Gaudio explained in an interview: “‘Who Loves You’ is a dark lyric with a positive outcome: There’s someone here for you, I’ll take care of you.”

During the 1960s, The Four Seasons enjoyed immense success in America, boasting a retro sound highlighted by Frankie Valli’s falsetto. However, this sound fell out of favor in the late ’60s, leading the group to sign with Motown Records in 1972. Their Motown releases saw limited success, and by 1974, they parted ways with the label.

As disco gained popularity in 1975, The Four Seasons embraced the trend. Their ’50s sound, once considered retro in the mid-’60s, now became cutting-edge a decade later, complemented by Valli’s falsetto that suited the disco groove perfectly. Signed to Curb Records, “Who Loves You” marked the group’s first single post-Motown, catapulting them back into the spotlight. Their subsequent single, “December 1963 (Oh What a Night),” proved an even bigger hit and equally groovy.

The release of “Who Loves You” also marked a change in the group’s lineup, now consisting of five members who played their own instruments. Original member Bob Gaudio transitioned from performing to a producer role, contributing vocals and keyboards to their studio productions.

Lyrics

Who loves you, pretty baby?
Who’s gonna help you through the night?
Who loves you, pretty mama?
Who’s always there to make it right?

Who loves you, pretty baby?
Who’s gonna help you through the night?
Who loves you, pretty mama?
Who’s always there to make it right?

Who loves you?
Who loves you, pretty baby?
Who’s gonna love you, mama?
Who loves you?
Who loves you, pretty baby?

When tears are in your eyes and you can’t find the way
It’s hard to make believe you’re happy when you’re gray
Baby, when you’re feelin’ like you’ll never see the mornin’ light
Come to me
Baby, you’ll see

Who loves you, pretty baby?
Who’s gonna help you through the night?
Who loves you, pretty mama?
Who’s always there to make it?

Who loves you?
Who loves you, pretty baby?
Who’s gonna love you, mama?
Who loves you?
Who loves you, pretty baby?

And when you think the whole wide world has passed you by
You keep on tryin’, but you really don’t know why
Baby, when you need a smile to help the shadows drift away
Come to me
Baby, you’ll see

Who loves you, pretty baby?
Who’s gonna help you through the night?
Who loves you, pretty mama?
Who’s always there to make it?

Who loves you?
Who’s gonna love you, love you?
Who’s gonna love you?
Who loves you?
Who’s gonna love you, love you?
Who’s gonna love you?

Baby, baby
Do-do-do-do
Come to me
Baby, you’ll see

Who loves you, pretty baby?
Who’s gonna help you through the night?
Who loves you, pretty mama?
Who’s always there to make it?

Who loves you?
Who’s gonna love you, love you?
Who’s gonna love you?
Who loves you?
Who’s gonna love you, love you?
Who’s gonna love you?
Who loves you, pretty baby?
Who’s gonna love you, love you?
